Camping

Big Valley Ranger District hosts five campgrounds in the Modoc National Forest.

Ash Creek

  • Located seven miles east of Adin at an elevation of 4,800 feet. This campground is fairly accessible and has good trout fishing throughout most of the year.
  • The campground offers seven RV/tent sites. There is a picnic table and fire pit at each campsite. The campground has a vault toilet. There is no drinking water or trash service available. You must pack out your own trash.
  • Directions from Adin: Travel seven miles east on County Road 88/527 toward Madeline. Turn north on Forest Road 22. Go about one mile to the campground.

Lava Camp

Lower Rush Creek
  • Lower Rush Creek is located in south west Modoc County a short distance off of Highway 299.
  • Access from Hwy 299 starts out paved but then becomes a good dirt road.
  • The sites are set among fairly shady deciduous trees and pines on Rush Creek.
  • Camp sites along the creek are shadier and prettier.
  • There is plenty of places to fish nearby, if that's your game, or you can drive to the top of Manzanita Lookout if you prefer to Four-Wheel.
  • Bathrooms are nice and clean.
  • Elevation 4400'.

Upper Rush Creek
  • Upper Rush Creek is located in south west Modoc County 5 miles off of Highway 299.
  • Access from Hwy 299 starts out paved but then becomes a good dirt road
  • The campground is located among very tall and shady pine trees.
  • All sites are very scenic, a few of them are right on Rush Creek and are probably the best.
  • Campsites are large and fairly private.
  • Upper Rush Creek is in a steep canyon and gets very little direct sunlight, keeping this place nice and cool. There is fallen wood around for campfires and some sites have lots of pine needles, good for tent sleeping comfort.
  • Bathrooms are in typical Modoc fashion, primitive and clean.

Willow Creek
  • Willow Creek camp is located on CA Highway 139 between Eagle Lake and the community of Adin, California.
  • The campground is separated from the highway by it's namesake, Willow Creek.
  • There are a number of day visitors because of it's highway proximity and is mainly used as a rest area.
  • Not many people stay over night.
  • The campground is paved and well shaded with deciduous trees and the occasional pine.
  • The creek runs year round and is fished.
  • Elevation 5200'.
  • Crowding: 3.
  • Shade Factor: 4.
  • Sites: 8.
  • Pit Toilets.
  • Open 5/15-10/1.

  • Piped Water.
  • Fee $6.00.
